Alumni Interview with Blaire Piha ‘07

What college or university did you attend after SAAS (or what did you pursue instead?) What did you major in? Did you get other degrees?

Blaire Piha: I attended the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk Jayhawk!) and graduated with the class of 2011. I was the first SAAS student to go to Kansas for college as well. Sociology was my major, with a minor in Business. I also studied abroad during the spring of my junior year in Nicosia, Cyprus. It was an amazing experience for me to take Sociology classes while living abroad!

What unique experiences have you had since leaving SAAS? Trips, internships, jobs, etc.

Blaire: As I mentioned above, living abroad for 6 months during college was a huge highlight for me. I not only was a student, but also went on amazing trips. Highlights being sky diving in Italy, and visiting the pyramids in Egypt! I was completely immersed in the culture in Cyprus, and many of the friends I made while living there were also studying in Cyprus from different countries. Another unique experience for me was traveling to New Orleans for the first time last November. I was so inspired and excited by the rich culture, gorgeous architecture and delicious food!

What are your favorite memories from SAAS? What programs, teams, extracurriculars were you involved in while at SAAS? Who were your most influential teachers at SAAS?

Blaire: The Seattle Challenge was definitely one of my most memorable experiences during my time at SAAS. I started SAAS in the 8th grade, so it was a great opportunity for me to get to know other students in my grade, have an eye opening experience, and really empathize with what the homeless in Seattle go through every day. Conner, Melinda, Stephanie and Karen Hagen are a few of my most memorable and influential teachers. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them!

Where are you now and what do you do? Where do you see yourself in 10 years? How did SAAS help prepare you for your job today?

Blaire: I have been working at the National MS Society, Greater Northwest Chapter the past 3 year in Fundraising and Development. I work closely on our two fundraising events, Bike and Walk MS. All I hope 10 years from now is that I am pursuing a career that I love and enjoy, and that I am good at! SAAS prepared me to be an independent and hardworking individual. SAAS also provided me with the skills to always voice my ideas and the motivation to never stop learning!
