Tis the season to give and receive.
Although winter break is long over, it is important to recognize those who helped the less fortunate during the holidays. Nine Seattle Academy students and several students from other schools volunteered on Saturday, December 14, with craft making and gift distribution at the Miller Community Center on Capitol Hill. We would like to thank Kellen O’Brien ‘17, Deena Kennedy ‘17, Evie Bellew ‘15, Stella Esensten-Cicon ‘17, Karsten Griswold ’17, Hannah Fleischmann ‘16, Shea Leibow ‘16, and Emma Duchin ’16 for participating in the event. Hundreds of gifts were donated by Toys R Us to be given to families of all sizes. A buffet-style table allowed parents get their little children the newest Barbie doll or elite Nerf gun.
The Community Service Organization (C.S.O.) works to make opportunities available to students at SAAS both for community service hours and for mental cleansing. Students are given the option to help the community once a month, usually at a month or holiday themed event (October: “Hilloween,” November: serving food and acting as personal shoppers for members from the homeless community, December: gift wrapping, January: helping at the MLK march, etc.). But not only does C.S.O. help students figure out when and where to serve, they have organized a program that lets Seattle Academy students tutor 6th graders every Thursday at Mercer Middle School. Going every Wednesday to C.S.O. lunch meetings isn’t even a necessity to be in the club. Ask yourself once in a while what you could do to help out… It’s community service!
