The new schedule adds an 8th period to be filled with new required classes, and makes blocks longer, to further develop Seattle Academy’s curriculum and advance the school in a new direction. Seniors Avidan Baral, Ben Gode, and Avi Shapiro sat down with Deans of Faculty Alison Ray and Fred Strong to get some answers.

Review/Preview: The Upper School Vocal Showcase Performs

December 02, 2016 in Arts & Entertainment, SAAS Life, Visual

The Upper School Vocal Showcase had its first show in the Orvis Theatre on Thursday, December 1. Eighteen freshmen, led by Mark Hoover, embraced the culture of performance and sang 27 songs. The show opened and closed with two ensemble songs, “Imagine,” by John Lennon, and “We Built This City,” by Starship, which the class sung together, while the rest were sung by between one and four students.

The singers have worked tirelessly for weeks to master not only their songs, but also choreography that goes along with them, such as the interaction between Orson Smith ‘20 and Lauren Hanauer ‘20 in their song “Life of the Party.”

“It’s nice because you work hard but it’s also a place to explore your abilities and have a lot of fun,” said Gracie Duck ’20. The result? A cheering audience that loved every second of every song.

This production took more than just singers though. Mark Hoover played the piano for five songs, and Ed Hofmann, assisted by Tech Theater students, was in charge of lighting. While they didn’t receive their own round of applause, they definitely deserved one for creating a fantastic atmosphere on the stage.

Watching our friends and classmates open up and give their all was an eye-opening experience for us - we saw how anyone can possess a unique talent that is just waiting to be shared.

The Vocal Showcase will perform again tonight (December 2) at 7 PM.
