The King is dead! The first episode of the six-part play “Regicide” was performed in the Blackbox Theatre by the Advanced Acting class on Thursday, December 15. “Regicide” follows the story of a doomed monarch and the mystery of his death. Don’t miss Episode 2 in the Blackbox at lunch on Friday, January 13!
In Episode 1 we were introduced to the cast of characters and their individual dilemmas, which brings me to one of my favorite parts of “Regicide.” The plot explores the lives and struggles of all the castle’s occupants, not just those of the royalty. First, we learn that the handmaiden has stolen a necklace from one of the princesses to pay for the kitchen boy’s education—except the princess finds out about it, and now she wants a favor in return. The king’s cousin hates him; could she have killed him for it? Meanwhile, the other two princesses are fighting over a man that only one can have. And of course, we meet the king and queen, a couple whose love for each other is fading, especially after the king confesses his adultery to the priest. The queen is in the room as he speaks the words, and their marriage crumbles before our eyes. Could the queen have poisoned him? Or was it the underappreciated jester, whom the king always looked down upon…you’ll have to see the next episodes to find out!
Mike Cimino is directing, with Wynn O’Donnell ‘17 as the King. Genevieve Goodman ‘17 (one of the handmaidens) and Audrey Kenefick ‘17 (the queen) also gave standout performances. Overall, the cast, crew, and directors put together a hilarious first episode. First up on your must-watch list for 2017: Episode 2 of “Regicide” in the Blackbox on Friday, January 13.
