Seattle Academy Head of School Joe Puggelli is retiring after serving the school for 22 years. Next year, Joe is looking forward to “sleeping a little bit more,” reading material that has piled up over the last two decades, and “working out during daylight hours for a change.”

The new schedule adds an 8th period to be filled with new required classes, and makes blocks longer, to further develop Seattle Academy’s curriculum and advance the school in a new direction. Seniors Avidan Baral, Ben Gode, and Avi Shapiro sat down with Deans of Faculty Alison Ray and Fred Strong to get some answers.

A Review of the Vocal Ensemble Concert: Love Train

February 28, 2017 in SAAS Life, Visual

On Saturday, February 11, I attended the closing night of “Love Train,” the Vocal Ensemble performance. The 31 students, under the direction of Mark Hoover, sang almost three dozen songs, including two ensemble songs, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” and “Love Train.” They also sang an original, “Go Ahead,” co-written by Jaidyn Lam ‘18 and Clara Cimino ‘17. The students in Vocal Ensemble had spent weeks rehearsing their songs, with the result being boisterous cheers and applause frequently interrupting their songs.

Each night they performed, the Vocal Ensemble students sang thirty-two songs. In addition to their two ensemble numbers, they performed multiple large group songs. These included ten of the 10th graders singing “Take a Chance on Me,” and the six senior girls singing “Landslide.” All of the songs were great, but these two in particular were amazing.

Vocal Ensemble is not a class. It is an after-school group than rehearsed during their free time, instead of during the school day. After spending weeks dedicated to perfecting their songs, they performed brilliantly, and on closing night, their final ensemble song, “Love Train” received a standing ovation.

For those of you who missed the shows, a copy of the video can still be purchased.

The next Upper School vocal performance will be Vocal Review’s opening night on Wednesday, March 22. Stay tuned for a review of that performance.
