The new schedule adds an 8th period to be filled with new required classes, and makes blocks longer, to further develop Seattle Academy’s curriculum and advance the school in a new direction. Seniors Avidan Baral, Ben Gode, and Avi Shapiro sat down with Deans of Faculty Alison Ray and Fred Strong to get some answers.

Teacher Profile: Lily Hotchkiss

February 07, 2018 in Arts, Visual

In January, Lily Hotchkiss began teaching the Advanced Visual Art class, in place of Amanda Amsel who is on maternity leave. Lily is excited to teach the class.
"It's more of a journey [than a class]," Lily said.
Lily has been working at Seattle Academy as a ceramics and fiber arts teacher for five years.

She was born with a passion for art and felt out of place doing other activities. "I never imagined not doing art. It's totally in me," Lily said.
From the beginning Lily was surrounded by art; her family owned a theatre company called, "The Firehouse Theatre."
"I don't remember a time that I didn't have art in my life," Lily said.
At California College of the Arts (CCA) Lily pursued film and photography. She later started to practice drawing, painting, and ceramics.
"I used to do costume work," Lily said. Costume design allowed her to find a passion for fiber arts. However, she wanted to teach art.
"Working with youth is an amazing journey. I'm always learning from all my students," Lily said.

"I like [experiential] learning [by] exploring current events and social justice," Lily said.
Roberto Lugo, who inspires Lily's work, creates pottery that portrays issues of social justice.  "I admire the work he does as a community member," Lily said.
Lily's artwork expresses her voice and artistic ideas.
"I need to reflect on the whole and find a way back into some action that will propel me forward," Lily said.
