The Community Service Organization (CSO) completed its October volunteer project on Saturday, October 25 at Hilloween, an annual Halloween celebration put on by the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce. This was the second year that SAAS students participated in Hilloween. The event consists of a carnival at Cal Anderson Park, a costume parade, trick-or-treating on Broadway, and a pizza party. CSO members like to reach out to different organizations each month, so Hilloween is the only Chamber of Commerce event we plan each year. Seniors Jasmin Fortin and Alexis Allen, both in CSO, arranged the volunteer opportunity for SAAS students. Nasir Green ‘18, Lilia Hargreaves ‘18, Kellen O’Brien ‘17, Molly Schwartz ‘15, Jonny Soriano ‘16, Adam Binford ‘15, Abby Moss ‘18, Noah McLean ‘16, Arianna Fardad ‘16, and I volunteered at the event. We made up only a fraction of the total number of volunteers of a wide range of ages. Up to six hours of service could be earned from helping at the event.
In addition to setting up and taking down tents and decorations, volunteers ran the carnival games, made popcorn, ran errands for event managers, and interacted with families at the carnival. It was raining for most of the event, but a big top tent protected carnival-goers from the weather. Live bands and acts entertained the families, and there were games, such as “Grave Fishing,” “Mummy Knock Down,” and “Pin the Tail on the Werewolf.” More information and photos can be found on the Hilloween website, www.caphilloween.com.
